tech help please MS Outlook

Can any explain why all of a sudden I can't send messages from Outlook when I'm at home? Used to work fine, but in the last week or so, I'm receiving messages alright, but the outgoing ones are staing in my outbox. I been into the account settings bit and that seems not to have changed. When I send a test message I get something along the lines of "Unable to connect to the outgoing mail server (SMTP) Please verify the server name in the outgoing mail server field. If that information is correct...yada..check the port and SSL information on the advanced tab"

Port and SSL haven't changed, and outgoing mail server is set to Sky.com, which has always worked in the past.

What in the name of Mr.Spock's ears is going on?

Have you tried rebooting?

Failing that, have a look at the settings on the skybroadband site, particularly with regards to authentication; that can lead to everything going tits-up.

Re: tech help please MS Outlook

Thanks for those links Mr. Weeksie.

Being a total IT dummy, have I understood this correctly...

Lookig through that unofficial forum for Sky users, it appears Sky have switched to using some google server for their email service, apparently either without telling their customers, or at least making it clear what the implications would be. It seems there are instructions out there for making the necessary adjustments if you are using a Sky email address, but if you are using your own domain name (like I am for my business), you are fucked as far as sending outgoing messages is concerned, as google don't like it?

I changed my outgoing server to the smtp.tools.sky.com, which seems to be getting a better response, but when I try a test email, it keeps telling me to check my email address, which is my business one, so I know to be correct.

Why do these fuckers have to change shit that was working OK before? Cunts.

More proof that Sky are cunts, Noos.

Try this mate, there is a post at the end which suggests how to get around the problem with non-Sky email addresses:

Re: tech help please MS Outlook

Do the company with whom you registered the domain (or indeed your hosting company) offer smtp services?

May be worthwhile looking into that.

Re: tech help please MS Outlook

I have applied to the site that Weeksie linked me to to sort me out for an smtp thingy. It's free, apparantly, I just had to register with the site, which I've done. Once they have sent me whatever they say they'll send me, I'll n doubt be back on here begging for help again.

That, or I'll fetch the pigeons out of retirement. Never let me down those pigeons. Pmail. It's the past, but it's a fuck of a lot easier than the future folks.

The company with whom I registered the domain were called 123 Reg. A more useless bunch of cunts you couldn't hope to meet outside of the Sky Customer Fuckyouline in Bangalore.

Noos, you can use any smtp host to send mails.theres no restrictions on the port so if someone on here gave you a bt one or something it'd work straight away. Its only the pop one that requires login credentials.I'd say your hosts are having dns issues
go to outlook/tools/email accounts/view or change existing/next/change and add in the smtp host-don't use gmails though, they use a different port

Wrong. What you're talking about is called open relays. Open mail relay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The port is not important, that can be configured on the smtp server. ISP's are normally faced with a dilemma regarding open relayes. One, they do not want to serve spam to customers, so don't want everuybody to send mail through their servers, but they also have to think about customers with more than 1 email address from different domains, wishing to send email through the smtp server. DNS issues on the mail server is very rare, if anything, MX records being screwed up is much more likely.
